Welcome Members and Friends

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a nonprofit educational and service organization that empowers women to succeed and advance in the field of engineering and to be recognized for their life-changing contributions as engineers and leaders. The objectives for the Society were adopted when the society was founded in 1950 and are still applicable today:

  • Inform young women, their parents, counselors, and the general public of the qualifications and achievements of women engineers and the opportunities open to them.
  • Assist women in readying themselves for a return to active work after a temporary leave or retirement.
  • Serve as a center of information on women in engineering.
  • Encourage women engineers to attain high levels of education and professional achievement.

Letter from Our President

Dear SWE Boston Members,

Writing my message to you this month is both the easiest and hardest to write since my time as President.

First and foremost, SWE Boston is not going anywhere. We remain committed to the mission, cultivating a community where our members are welcomed and supported. SWE continues advocating for equity, and ensuring women and other marginalized groups continue to thrive in STEM.

SWE HQ recently sent out an email with the subject being SWE Call to Action Amid Legislative Challenges. I strongly encourage you to read that email; if you did not receive it or accidentally deleted it and want to read it – please email me at president@swe.org and I will be happy to forward it to you. I will share a quote from that communication directly.

“The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) reaffirms our unwavering commitment to empowering women to reach their full potential as engineers and leaders. We stand resolute in our mission to advocate for gender parity, equity, and opportunity in STEM – regardless of shifting policies.”

I recognize that at some companies and universities, their local SWE sections are being discouraged, losing funding, or being shut down all together. This enrages and hurts me in a way words cannot convey. I encourage everyone to reach out to your local legislators, congressperson, and senators to share your thoughts and opinions. Click the links to find your congressperson or senator.

While details are not clear on these affected SWE sections, for individuals who are affected, please know you are welcome in SWE Boston. You are not alone. To quote from that same email:

“Together, we are stronger. SWE remains committed to standing with you, advocating for equity, and ensuring that women in STEM continue to thrive. Thank you for your resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment to progress.”

For those interested in having a safe place to have conversations, SWE Boston will be organizing meetups (both virtual and in-person). Please contact us with questions or feedback.

We are in this together.
