Mary Pottle Scholarship
To honor Mary Pottle’s memory and continue her mission of promoting human rights and SWE’s mission of empowering women engineers, we are establishing a memorial scholarship fund to benefit women and students of marginalized genders pursuing degrees in STEM (science technology engineering mathematics). This fund will be an endowment that will benefit STEM students in Eastern Massachusetts for years to come.
SWE Boston Section Scholarships
In 1995, Boston hosted the annual Society Conference – it broke all attendance and fundraising records to date. With proceeds earned from that conference, SWE Boston allocated funds to help support a new section (Southern New Hampshire) and started a scholarship program for women studying engineering at local universities. From 1996-2007 SWE Boston awarded more than 30 scholarships! In 2008 the section voted to allocate remaining funds to endow a long-term scholarship.
As one of the initial SWE sections starting in 1950, SWE-Boston has a rich history of supporting women in technical fields. In 1989 the section surpassed 300 members and has continued to be amongst the largest professional sections in the society. One priority remaining consistent throughout the years has been to connect with local collegiates. We provide collegiate section counselors, we hold an annual student/professional networking event, and we endowed this scholarship.
This scholarship is awarded annually to a junior or senior collegiate who resides in Massachusetts and attends one of the ABET accredited colleges located within the geographic boundaries of the SWE Boston section. The recipients are invited to be recognized at the annual SWE Boston awards banquet and they are encouraged to join the section as a professional member after they graduate.
